Wolves of
Ca'tur
Before there was anything, there was the Hush, and in the Hush there was a grey wolf who had forgotten nearly everything about herself except that there had once been a sound. So she put her head back and howled, and the Hush went back from the Howl the way water goes back from a dropped stone, and the world grew into the space it left. The world is called Ærath. The country at its heart, under the place where the Howl struck the sky and tore a hole in it, is Ca'tur.
Three thousand years ago the Howl-Mother had six pups in the roots of the first tree. She fed five of them with pieces of the First Howl, and they grew into the Great Wolves, Sárrik, Mórrow, Áldyn, Nócht and Tánnik, whom the five packs of Ca'tur follow. The sixth was born already carrying a howl of her own. When the hole in the sky tore wider, she went up and filled it, and she is still there. Her name is Mo'ón, and she is the Moon. Her brothers blamed one another for losing her, and their packs fought for four hundred years. Now the Standing, stone giants who have walked toward the crossroads one step a year since the first night, have begun climbing onto one another's backs to make a stair, and the stair is aimed at the Moon.
